As the only doctoral degree in science in our university - system science, its discipline construction and talent training have always been the focus of the School of Science. On November 23, Reuben Clement Kunda, the first international student in the major, defended his master's thesis.
The members of the Defence Committee are composed of five professors of systems science. Professor Ding Yiming, the chairman of the defense committee, the doctoral supervisor of Wuhan University of Technology, first stated the requirements and process of the defense. Subsequently, kunda, an international student, introduced his native Zambia and elaborated on the main content of his graduation thesis from seven aspects. The paper mainly takes the correlation between copper mining in Zambia and economic development as a scientific problem, uses systematic scientific thinking and statistical learning methods to explore the long-term equilibrium relationship between the two, constructs multiple feasible mathematical models, selects statistical optimization indicators to find the optimal fitting model, and further predicts the impact and development trend of future copper mining in the country.
In the subsequent question-and-answer session, Feng Yuqiang, Tu Lilan, Chen Guizi and Wang Wenbo, four doctoral supervisors of the School of Science's systems science major who participated in the defense review, raised questions about the model, method, and interpretation of the results. Kunda gave clear and fluid answers one by one. The defense review team believes that the student's main work statement of the thesis in the defense is standardized, the answers to the questions are complete and correct, and the thesis has reached the level of the master's degree thesis, and unanimously agreed to award the student a master's degree in systems science. The defense was conducted in English.
After the end of this defense, He expressed his gratitude to the school. Living in China and studying at Wuhan University of Science and Technology, he experienced a strong academic atmosphere. Thanks to the college for providing good experimental conditions for scientific research. Thanks to the teachers of the discussion group for their hard work, which made his graduation project more perfect. He also thanks the tutor Ding Yongmei for his careful training, so that he could grow and progress step by step.
It is reported that there are more than 260 graduate students in the School of Science, including 9 overseas students, all of whom are pursuing master's degrees in systems science. In the 2021 American College Students Mathematical Modeling Competition, the Faculty of Science international student team won two third prizes.
